Evaporation-Driven Density Instabilities in Saturated Porous Media

چکیده
Soil salinization is a major cause of soil degradation and hampers plant growth. For soils saturated with saline water, the evaporation water induces accumulation salt near top soil. The remaining liquid gets an increasingly larger density due to salt, giving gravitationally unstable situation, where instabilities in form fingers can form. These hence lead net downwards transport salt. We here investigate appearance these through linear stability analysis numerical simulations. gives criteria for onset large range parameters. Simulations using set parameters give information also about development after onset. With this knowledge we predict whether when occur, their effect on concentration boundary.

Transport of acridine in saturated porous media.
The effects of the aqueous solution pH, temperature, initial solute concentration and non-equilibrium processes on the transport of acridine in saturated porous media (silica) were investigated in a series of continuous-flow column experiments. The enthalpy of the adsorption reaction was more exothermic when the solution pH was above acridine's pKa (5.6) than when it was below. The extent of ad...
متن کاملWaves in Partially Saturated Porous Media
E orts to extend the theory of poroelasticity to semilinear and nonlinear elastic response, to partially saturated pores, to inhomogeneous solid frame materials, and to viscous losses due to localized ow e ects are summarized. The prospects for a comprehensive theory of wave propagation in partially saturated porous media and the reasons for needing such a theory are also discussed. The main re...
متن کاملModeling colloid attachment, straining, and exclusion in saturated porous media.
A conceptual model for colloid transport is developed that accounts for colloid attachment straining, and exclusion. Colloid attachment and detachment is modeled using first-order rate expressions, whereas straining is described using an irreversible first-order straining term that is depth dependent. Exclusion is modeled by adjusting transport parameters for colloid-accessible pore space. Fitt...
متن کاملSolute transport during cyclic flow in saturated porous media
We consider materials with large pores interconnected by thin long channels saturated with an incompressible fluid. In the absence of fluid flow, solute transport in the porous network is diffusion controlled, however, solute transport can be enhanced when the porous network is subjected to a cyclic flow with zero time average velocity. We develop a mathematical model to analyze this physical p...
متن کاملConvective instabilities of chemical fronts in close-packed porous media
Spatiotemporal pattern formation in the autocatalytic chlorite–tetrathionate reaction is studied experimentally in porous media where heterogeneities are introduced as glass beads packed in a monolayer. From initially vertical planar chemical fronts in a vertical slab, asymmetric convective structures with stable geometry evolve which propagate horizontally with constant speed. The single conve...
